About HFPE HFPE is a private, nonpartisan institution dedicated to research and education on issues of government, politics, regulatory oversight and supervision involving private investment firms. Devoted to independent research and assisting in the formulation of innovative policy solutions, HFPE's research activities involve representative members of the private investment industry and the professionals that serve them, as well as members of academia and scholars from a wide variety of “think tanks.” Our research events are designed to inform the public debate and not advance any political cause, with the goal of providing a comprehensive dialogue and thoughtful recommendation for regulators and lawmakers. HFPE and its members understand the need for a joining of the public and private sectors' expertise to develop sound public policy in this arena, and endeavor to provide a forum for an open, frank dialogue. Recent EventsSince its formation, HFPE has conducted a series of high-level roundtable research events. Participants included former senior US regulators, representatives of Western European financial services supervisory authorities, noted law, finance and economics professors and scholars representing a wide variety of political views and ideologies, as well as hedge fund managers, administrators, prime brokers, seeders, attorneys and accountants. These roundtable discussions were planned as a broad research exercise to fully examine and understand the operations and activities of hedge funds and other pooled private investment vehicles. Specifically, the roundtable discussions were designed to better recognize the role hedge funds and other private investment firms play in global financial markets and the world economy, and to further explore the current regulatory environment and public perception surrounding privately managed funds. In this research, panelists were selected to represent a broad range of interests within the financial services and private investment industries, as well as representatives from relevant regulatory authorities, academia and public policy experts. The results of these sessions have been compiled in a detailed report of findings that is both informative and provocative, and, though not yet publicly available, has captured the interest of those that have been made privy to a synopsis of the report, including members of academia, representatives of the private investment industry, and policy-makers and legislators. Future Events Going forward, HFPE will conduct ongoing public policy research on a wide variety of issues and topics regarding the activities and global operations of hedge funds, private equity firms and other private pooled investment vehicles. For example, because of their growing investment in, and influence on hedge fund operations, HFPE plans to convene a roundtable discussion comprised of representatives of a variety of institutional investors and fund of funds managers. In addition, HFPE will convene a series of roundtable conferences with regulators, lawmakers and other public officials. These events will incorporate elements of a traditional conference featuring a morning keynote speaker followed immediately by separate break-out groups, comprised of conference participants that will engage in their own roundtable discussions. Typically, conference attendees will discuss the keynote speech, as well as any other topics that are raised by participants, or an HFPE moderator. Finally, HFPE is available to undertake discrete public policy research on a wide variety of issues and initiatives. HFPE Policies and Procedures HFPE maintains policies and procedures for assuring the integrity and reputation of its work. The most important of these are set forth below.
